Established in 1900, the Métro de Paris has become a symbol of the city of Paris as a result of its design system. This work consists of a data-collection performance of signage and graphic design elements present in the urban setting of the Métro de Paris on the stops where the artist began their observational journey of the city: from the artist’s home stop Gambetta to the Parsons Paris campus stop Quatre-Septembre on line 3, removing the intellectual and functional content from these elements and breaking them down to the pure visual characteristics of the design. The resulting work is a simulated understanding of how we might perceive a city for the first time through its design system, as well as a critical analysis of the authority of design to dictate our movements in an urban environment.
